The Manly Village Public School Band

Manly Village Public School currently has 3 bands. Membership of the band program is open to all students in Years 3-6. The program aims to:

  • encourage the participation of as many children as possible;
  • enable children to enjoy music and play music for other people’s enjoyment;
  • teach children to play music in an ensemble and encourage team spirit;
  • provide performance experience, building confidence and self esteem;
  • introduce and develop an appreciation for a wide variety of music;

Current Bands

Manly Village Concert Band

In 2012 this band will replace our Jazz Ensemble. Students who gain entry, by audition, into the Concert Band will play more challenging and complex pieces. The concert Band practioses twice a week:

  • Monday lunch time from 1.15 to 1.55pm
  • Wednesday before school from 8.15am to 9.15am

Manly Village Senior Band

This band consists of students who have reached a standard that is well beyond beginners’ level. Students have been learning music for over a year and enjoy being challenged with a broad repertoire of concert pieces which contain an increased degree of difficulty.
The Senior Band practises twice a week:

  • Monday before school from 8.15am to 9.15am
  • Wednesday lunch time from 1:15am to 1:55am

Manly Village Training Band

Training Band is the ideal opportunity for the students to become confident with their new instruments in an environment which is both supportive and fun. All new band members will initially be placed in the Training Band, and be provided with the opportunity to progress to the Senior Band depending on their ability. Children enrolling in training band are required to have had at least 4 private music lessons before rehearsals begin. The Training Band has one practice per week:
Tuesday before school from 8:15am to 9:15am

Instruments

Students can choose to learn instruments from the following list: baritone, bassoon, bass clarinet, bass guitar, clarinet, euphonium, flute, French horn, keyboard, oboe, percussion, saxophone (tenor and alto), tenor horn, trombone, trumpet and tuba.

Manly Village offers an instrument hire service. Instruments owned by the school include clarinets, flutes, trumpets, trombones, alto saxophones, tenor horns, a glockenspeil, a bass guitar, a bass clarinet, a tenor saxophone, a baritone and a euphonium. These are serviced each Christmas; therefore any other repair costs are met by the family hiring the instrument. The cost of hiring an instrument through the school is between $30 and $50 a term.

Performances

Throughout the year our bands perform at a variety of venues including school assemblies, school concerts, community concerts, band festivals and competitions, Band Camp and Presentation Day.

Band Camp

A two day Band Camp is held in Term 2 during which specialised tuition is provided for each section of the band. The camp is invaluable not only in musical terms but it also provides the opportunity for new and current band students to get to know each other and to work as a team. In 2012 the camp will be held on 6 - 7 June.

2010 Committee

The Band Committee is made up of supportive parents whose responsibilities include the administration of the band program. The committee is overseen by the school band coordinator, Ms Tiffany Marshall, and the principal, Mrs Leonie Black.

Fees

$115 per semester for Senior Band and Concert Band
$75 per semester for Training Band

In addition to this will be your personal costs for hire or purchase of an instrument as well as tuition. Musical instrument lessons are an integral part of the Band Program and all students are required to have a 30 minute weekly individual tuition session for their allocated instrument. Parents arrange their child’s musical instrument lesson outside the band program. Manly Village School has available a list of music tutors which parents may find useful. This is available from Ms Marshall.
