English as a Second Language

Manly Village Public School has children enrolled that come from many different cultural backgrounds. Even though the majority of students are Australian born, we share our school with children from many countries. Some of these countries are listed below.

ESL support is provided on the basis of small group withdrawal or classroom based support.

A specialist ESL teacher, Ms Walliker, provides support to the English language development of students whose first language is not English. This support ranges from students newly arrived in Australia who are beginning to learn English, to Australian-born students who speak a language other than English at home and who require further development of their English language skills and on-going English language support.

We are very excited to have increased our English as a Second Language teacher allocation from one day per week to two days per week in 2008. We are also pleased to have increased our New Arrival allocation from one day per week to one and a half days per week. This has enabled Ms Walliker to provide more comprehensive programs.
