Personal Development, Health and Physical
Education

Personal Development
Children from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in a Child
Protection program which is designed to teach children how
to develop and maintain positive relationships with others
and how to identify safe and unsafe situations. A range of
classroom strategies are used to ensure students learn the
necessary skills for optimal participation. These include
use of stories, role play, games, group work and brainstorming.
Values
Students at our school are encouraged to demonstrate the core
values of respect, responsibility, cooperation, integrity,
democracy, fairness, excellence and care, in their daily interactions
with one another and to all visitors. The values are also
reinforced as an integral part of our school wide merit system.
The school receives much recognition from the wider community
on their display of respect and responsibility when they represent
the school and when we invite visitors into the school.
Life
Education
Each year the children look forward to their visitor, Happy
Healthy Harold, who they see when the Life Education van visits
Manly Village. It is in the Life Education van that the students
participate in interactive activities that aim to develop
the social skills necessary for effective decision making,
communication and negotiation. The overall aim of the program
is to reduce the use of smoking, drinking and illegal drugs.
Safety
Throughout primary school, students learn about how they can
be safe. This includes learning about road safety, water safety,
sun safety, stranger danger and anti bullying strategies.
Sporting Opportunities
Gross Motor
Kindy children commence their school sport experience by participating
in a fun filled gross motor program, which is designed to
develop locomotor (running, dodging etc), nonlocomotor (stretching,
twisting etc) and manipulative (throwing, kicking etc) skills.
Surf Education
The unique location of our school provides special opportunities
for sport, such as surfing lessons and surf education for
primary students.

Sailing
Students in Years 3-6 have an option of attending sailing in Terms 1 and 4. This involves walking to Manly Skiff Club each Friday afternoon with a teacher. There are typically 2 people on each small sailing boat. The children are supervised by the accompanying teacher and staff from the sailing providers. The children are instructed on how to sail. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children who are fortunate to live in the seaside Manly location.
Kayaking
Students in Years 5-6 may choose to participate in weekly
kayaking lessons in either Term 1 or Term 4. The kayaking school, Manly Kayaks, is situated adjacent to Ocean World and is run by skilled kayaking instructors.
Every Friday afternoon during first and fourth terms, 30 students walk down to the harbour side where kayaks are provided for their use. Clear and careful instructions are provided by the staff at Manly Kayak School.
The children participate in races, iron man competitions and leisurely paddles. They learn to manoeuvre a kayak over the nine week program.
We believe it is important for our children to further develop their knowledge and proficiency in and around the water, since they live in this wonderful seaside location.

Beach Volleyball
This may be selected by students in Years 3 to 6 in first and/or fourth terms. The students walk down to Manly Beach on Friday afternoon. They receive guidance as to skills and rules and participate in friendly games on the beach.
Tennis
Children are coached in the basic skills associated with the
game of tennis and participate in related minor games with
their peers.
Swimming
30 children from years 3 & 4 have the opportunity to attend learn to swim classes at Manly Boy Charleton Pool on friday afternnoons during Term 1 & 4. They travel to the pool by bus accompanied by a teacher. The lessons are 45min in duration and are conduct by qualified swimming instructors.
Competitive Sport
Students from Year 3 have the chance to compete in PSSA (Public
Schools Sports Association) sports such as soccer, rugby league
and netball during second and third terms. They participate
in training activities on Friday mornings so that they develop the required skills
and so that they learn the rules of the game.
Rugby League
The rugby league players are taught the skills and rules of the game each Friday morning during traning sessions and compete against other schools on Friday afternoons.
Netball
Children receive coaching in the basic skills associated with the
game of netball each Friday morning by teachers and helpful parents. They compete on Friday afternoons against other schools in the district at Curl Curl.

Children receive coaching in the basic skills associated with the
game of soccer each Friday morning by teachers and helpful parents. They compete on Friday afternoons against other schools in the district at local soccer fieldsl. There are competitions for both boys and girls.
Gymnastics
Students have a semester of gymnastics once a week in the
school hall, with specialist gymnastics teachers. They explore
various movement skills, participate in games and skill training
and use a range of apparatus.
Aerobics and Dance
Aerobics and dance are regular sports activities, especially
for Kindy students. A dance company provides a wonderful program
for students in K-6, which culminates in an outside K-6 evening
dance event at the end of the year.
Beach Carnival
Students from Kindy to Year 2 love the annual beach carnival.
Events include sand races, wading races, obstacle course and
flag races.
Swimming
Annual Manly Village swimming carnivals are held at Manly's
Boy Charlton Pool. This event is well attended by our school
community.
Athletics Carnival
Each year we hold our athletics carnival. This kicks off with
a march past in house teams, followed by many different races
and activities.
Playground
A number of years ago, sports surfacing was installed in the
grounds which includes the basketball/netball courts and handball
squares. Double padding was placed under the play equipment
and artificial grass was installed in high volume areas of
the playground. A wide range of playground markings allow
students to play hopscotch, giant outdoor chess and other
games. The computer lab, library and indoor games are offered
as alternatives to playground games.
Games & Skills
Games and skills are integrated into all physical education
programs from Kindergarten to Year 6 to ensure children develop
the skills required for minor and major sport and to foster
team interaction.
