2018 Kindergarten

Starting school is an extremely important step for both you and your child. The Starting School page of the Department of Education website provides guidelines to assist you in determining your child's readiness for school.

Once you have made this important decision, it is our goal at Manly Village to ensure that your child feels happy and safe from his or her very first day.

To achieve this goal, we have implemented an extensive information and orientation programme, an ongoing buddy system, and a welcoming approach to your child's first day of school.

The process for 2018 Kindergarten enrolment will commence during Term 3 2017. The following forms will need to be filled out and returned to school to begin ensure your child's enrolment.

Kindergarten 2018 Transition to School Information and Key Dates for Your Diary

Dear Kindergarten 2018 Parents,

Beginning Kindergarten is an exciting and special time for children and their families. Our school's Kindergarten Transition to School Program aims to make the transition from home or an early childhood service to school a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

By now, you may have already completed an enrolment form. If you haven't as yet, these are available on the school website or from the office and should be completed as soon as possible and returned to the school. It is important to let the office staff know if your child has any special needs, allergies, asthma or anaphylaxis when enrolling your child. The information and dates provided below outline our school's Kindergarten Transition to School Program.

Monday 4 September 2017 6.30pm-7.30pm

Kindergarten Information Night (for parents only)

Please join us for a Kindergarten Information evening which will be held on Monday 4 September, 2018 from 6.30 -7.30 pm in the school hall.

During this session, Executive staff and Kindergarten teachers will outline our school's transition to school program as well as the programs and activities that Kindergarten children are involved in at school. Our staff will be available to answer any questions you may have about starting school.

This is a great opportunity for parents to meet the current Kindergarten teaching team. It will also allow parents to feel more informed about what lies ahead. Representatives from our Before and After School Care service (MOOSH), Parents and Citizens Association (P and C), Canteen and Uniform Shop will also be on hand to answer your questions.

We look forward to meeting you all at this important information evening.

Tuesday 5 September, 2017 10.00am-11.00am

Tour of the School for 2018 Kindergarten students and their families

Kindergarten 2018 students and their families are invited to attend a tour of the school led by our school leaders, prefects and members of the Student Representative Council.

Please meet under the new Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) in the playground for your tour of the school between 10.00am and 11.00am.

The tour is a great way to introduce children to the important places in the school such as the canteen, school hall, library and school office.

Two students will lead two or three families at a time on the tour and will be able to answer any questions you or your child might have about the school.

Please feel free to come at any time between 10.00am and 11.00am. It will be easier for us to make the groups a little smaller and more intimate if parents arrive over the course of the hour.

Monday 16 October 2017, 9.30am –11.00am

Transition to School Session for 2018 Kindergarten Students and Morning Tea for Parents

Kindergarten 2018 students are invited to have their first taste of school on Monday 16 October 2017 by attending a session in one of our Kindergarten classrooms.

We are committed to making this a positive experience for all. Please bring your child to school at 9.30am on this day. Our current students make their way to classes from 9.15am so please do not arrive too early as a heavy traffic flow may seem a little daunting for children on their first classroom visit.

Children and families will meet in the school hall at 9.30am where students will be split into four groups. Each group will have a colour. Children will have their names marked off, be provided with a name tag and then parents may accompany them into the colour-coded Kindergarten classroom. Parents are encouraged to engage their child with an activity and once they are settled attend a morning tea/discussion group which will be held in the hall and led by Principal, Ms Philippa Becker.

While in the Kindergarten classrooms, children will be involved in play experiences, an art and craft activity and a literacy or numeracy lesson.

During this time, teachers and school assistants will have an opportunity to meet and observe the children during their particular activities. Please let the school office know if you have any concerns about your child's participation in this session before the date so that we can work together to ensure a successful day.

Teachers will bring students out to the COLA to be collected by their parents at 11.00am.

Monday 23 October, 2017 9.30am –11.00am

Second Transition Session for 2017 Students and Parent Forum

The following week, children enrolling as Kindergarten 2018 will return to school for the second transition to school session. Parents should again bring their child to the hall to have their names marked off and to be presented with their name tag. Once this has occurred, parents may again accompany their child into the allocated Kindergarten classroom.

Parents should then return to the hall, where a forum on early literacy will be led by the Deputy Principal, Mr Luke Richmond. This will begin at 10.00am and finish at 10.50am approximately.

Children will again have the opportunity to engage in some play experiences, to meet new friends, to participate in an art activity and experience either a literacy or numeracy session.

Teachers will bring students out to the COLA to be collected at 11.00am.

Wednesday 8 November 2017 6.30-7.30pm

Final Parent Information Night (parents only)

The 2018 Kindergarten Transition to School Program will conclude with a final Question and Answer information evening in November. An email will be sent to parents asking for any questions they may have prior to this event. Parents will also be provided with opportunities to ask questions on the night.

During this session, we will discuss the ‘Best Start Interviews' and procedures surrounding the first day and the first few weeks of school.

Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 February 2018

Best Start Interviews

It is mandatory for all students enrolling in Kindergarten in NSW Public schools to participate in the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment.

An interview will be scheduled for each child. Your child will be taken through some early literacy and numeracy activities which will give their teacher some useful information on the knowledge and experiences your child brings to school. Students are not expected to come to school being able to read, write or count. The assessment provides an opportunity for teachers to begin to think about how they may group students in their class for literacy and numeracy to best cater for all students. Parents will receive a feedback report on how they can help their child at home after the assessments are completed.

The Best Start interviews take half an hour to complete. Children will be scheduled for their interview on either Tuesday 30 January or Wednesday 31 January, 2018. Parents will be able to book the interview online. More information on scheduling a booking will follow.

Thursday 1 February 2018

First Day Kindergarten 2018

The first full day for Kindergarten students will be on Thursday 1 February, 2018. Closer to the date, parents will be sent an allocated time of arrival. Each child will receive a different time to ensure that the new Kindergarten students are not overwhelmed on the first day of school. More information will be provided at the Final Transition Information Evening.

Thursday 1 – Friday 16 February 2018 9.15am-2.45pm

Short School Days Wednesday 1 February

The first few days of school are exhausting for students. For the first week and a half the school day is shortened by half an hour. Parents should make arrangements to pick their child up from school at 2.45pm on these days. After school care facilities will be available from 2.45pm.

Monday 19 February

Full school days begin from Monday 19 February, 2018.

We look forward to meeting you all very soon. We are hoping that you and your child enjoy the transition program at Manly Village Public School and will all feel very comfortable with the introduction to Kindergarten.

Kind Regards,

Luke Richmond
